Refillable Beauty

It pains me to read into the pollution that our beauty practises are contributing to. The statistics are astounding and the effects are devastating, but now more than ever there are beauty brands - old and new - that are making waves in changing what goes into their products and packaging and changing our habits as consumers in result. We've seen supermarkets turn to refillable produce and have long been aware of LUSH as a budget-friendly pioneer into the whole reuse/recycle/refill schemes on the high street. But now, brands at both high-end and high-street levels are having their "awakening" and are beginning to offer refills on their products, and a number of our cult favourites fall into the category. I hope a particular favourite is listed, and if it isn't, would you consider a change? It's time to do some good in the world and if refilling on your favourite lipstick is how to go about it, then so be it!

SKIN & BODY

Dior - L'or De Vie Serums, Dior Prestige creams and Dior Dreamskin Anti-Ageing Products. They also do refills on some of their best fragrances and make-up lines including Diorskin Forever Extreme Compact Foundation.

Yves Saint Laurent - Or Rouge Skincare. There's luxury and then there's Laurent. With ingredients such as saffron sugar, red algae, almond and evening primrose oil which combine to make an ultimate skin renewal formula. Exclusive to Selfridges

Yves Saint Laurent Pure Shots Serum - A second YSL serum but one I wanted to note because I love that they use a male in the campaign shot. Skincare is not just for women!

DIPTYQUE - Exfoliating Hand Wash (£26), Solid Perfume (£40) and Home Fragrances (£38). I love the hand wash and love the use of crushed olive pits as the alternative microbead in the formula. They are going to be rolling out their refillable product list further in the future.

AESOP - They refill the majority of their Body and Hand Cleansers. Strangely, these aren't available on the Aesop website but can be shopped on John Lewis.

L'Occitane - refill a huge selection of their products including bath soaps, bath mils, hand cleansers and hair products. My attention is directed to their Almond Shower Oil which is one of my favourite in-shower indulgences. You can shop the rest of the refills directly on the L'Occitane website.

RITUALS - am I a patron yet? I love my Rituals products and make a concerted effort to really feel like my self-care rituals are part of something bigger for my soul (which they are!) The refills include their body creams, home fragrances and anti-ageing creams. I have yet to try the latter, mind you.

REN Skincare will also be launching refillable skincare soon - sign up and stay in the know!

MAKEUP

Charlotte Tilbury - Hot Lips Lipstick Refill, £19

Giorgio Armani - Luminous Silk Powder Refill, currently £28.70 instead of £41

Kjaer Weis - Everything! The brand prides itself on being a refillable luxury makeup line. Everything from Lipstick, Pencils, Lashes and Skin. Shop the collection on Naturisimo.

La Bouge Rouge PARIS - another brand to know. I am obsessed with their slogan "change your red to change the world". They are pioneers in the lipstick market. Their entire product and supply chain is carefully considered to reduce and eradicate the use of plastics, within the product ingredients too. All cases are refillable and you can have them personalised with your initials. I just love it.

Hourglass Cosmetics - Refillable Lipstick, £20-22

MAC Cosmetics - They have been offering single-buy refills for their palettes for years. There are 136 shades of eye shadow to choose from apparently, so there's no excuse for a gap in your box.

Laura Mercier - Sadly, the beauty halls are yet to possess a refill station for souffle but they do sell a Laura Mercier Compact with 3 or 6 compartments for you to fill with the eye shadows and face powders of your choice. Buy the palette at John Lewis for £10.

Anna Sui - offers refillable face powders from foundations to contour kits to BB bases.

Mon Guerlain - The most gorgeous lipsticks and double G embossed powders are available to buy in single servings and refillable packages. I haven't tried the powders but No.520 of the Rouge G collection is my go-to for a creamy pink lip and smells delicious too.

CHANEL - Healthy glow gel foundation, refill around £34

FRAGRANCE // BODY

HERMES – both men's Eau de Toilette and women's Parfum refills available. My particular appreciation goes to the fact that you can buy the fragrance and the refill together as a set and without a body lotion that always appears in such gifts.

CHANEL – Coco Eau De Parfum 2oz Refill, around £80

Acqua di Parma – Eu de Parfum Refills come in sets of 3, around £76.50

Issey Miyake - Eau de Parfum. choose between a 25ml, 50ml and 75ml refill.

Le Labo – Eau de Parfum – refills £112

TOM FORD - Sadly not on their black orchid but it’s a start!

FRAGRANCE // HOME

L’OBJET – All natural and super artisanal too. Their products are sometimes a bit quirky, but their fragrances are strong, complex and invigorating. They only offer refills for their diffuser oils but if you're shopping their website, I bet you end up with more than you set out for. Home Fragrance Refill Sets £70

THE WHITE COMPANY – Obviously The White Company are a known brand in the home fragrance category so it's great to be able to include them on the re-fill list. Even if saving the environment wasn't top of their list when they started selling refills, allow it to be on your conscience instead. Diffuser Refills retail around £24 and the link is directly to Pomegranate for your ease.

Miller Harris London Based Perfumery – Reed Diffuser Refills are now £32 instead of £46. They use only natural ingredients and raw materials, all of which are sustainably sourced throughout the supply chain. My favourite is the MOSSKET as it’s super earthy but fresh, like cut grass but without the mud.

Max Benjamin – There are some gorgeous Italian inpired scents in the shape of candles, diffusers, hand and body products and stationary. Their candle refills are £16. The original candle (£24) comes in a reusable cup. You literally wipe it clean and put the new one in. The refills also come in 100% biodegradable packaging. My favourite scents are Lemongrass & Ginger for uplifting and refreshing, and Dodici for evening serenity.

NEOM - Reed Diffuser Refills, £25
