Did a younger version of me, one forced to wear a navy v-neck with canary yellow piping and a yellow gingham dress underneath, ever imagine that I would be writing the words "obsession" and "cardigan" in the same post? At that point in my life, it would have been a very confident no. They were "dorky", childlike, constricting, unflattering and incredibly unfashionable. Coupled with personal insecurity and surrounded by people who constantly tease? The cardigan was a nightmare.
But over the years, I have warmed (literally) to the idea of a cardigan. Not just one cardigan, but to the endless styles that just keep on coming, and the endless scenarios for which they can be worn. No longer are they childlike or old-lady-ish (although both of these genres can be incorporated into your look, of course), cardigans have become widely available and acceptable no matter who you are or what your personal style is. My own wardrobe varies from the super sleek and chic, to pieces that some may deem a little wacky. I might be wearing a camel coat and beige trousers one day, followed by a cloud-like maxi dress with a coat of navy fur with tartan ribbons criss-crossing down arm lengths (I'm looking at you, Shrimps!) the next. But that's the beauty of the cardigan. Whether you're looking to smarten up with a Chanel-style tweed, cosy up with a super chic maxi cashmere knit, or add a little jazz with quirky detailing, there is literally a cardigan for every mood.
