Quality drinks for your Quarantine Easter

Updated: Jun 6, 2020

Happy Easter Sunday everyone! Whilst we aren't able to surround ourselves with those we love, we shouldn't bypass marking the occasion with delicious foods and good drinks to go with them. In fact, I would say all the more reason to, wouldn't you agree? Here are 4 reasons to crack open the drinks cabinet whilst you crack open another egg.

The White Russian: for those indulging on sugar coated mini eggs, nutty flavoured nibbles and chocolate hot cross buns.

2 parts Vodka 1 part coffee liqueur, such as Baileys or Kahlua 1 part cream Ice

This can also be made vegan, using almond milk and an alternative cream of choice.

Pour all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker and top up with ice. Twist the shaker like you would a doorknob to mix - this will save it getting frothy - for 30 seconds to chill and combine everything together. Fill a glass with a few cubes of ice, pour and enjoy.

Alternatively, fill the glass with some ice, add vodka and kahlua and stir to combine. Pour in cream before serving.

Lamb lovers: Red Wine is really the best option here, and a Cabernet Sauvignon is a good way to go, especially if the meat is cooked with rosemary or thyme. Tonight I’ll be sipping on Frei Brothers Cabernet Sauvignon (£17.99, Waitrose) which also goes with beef or game if lamb is not your first choice today. A good Rioja is also great with lamb.

Wakey wakey, eggs and cakey: If you’re indulging on your quarantine baked cakes (or banana bread, as is the trend), sweet breads like brioche, or the traditional Italian Easter Dove Bread (Colomba Pasquale), then you want a late-harvest white wine with enough sweetness to stand against that of the foods your eating such as a Riesling or Pinot Gris. Otherwise, you have permission to crack open an Extra or Semi- Dry Prosecco as the acidity and lightness pairs well with sweetened foods or light nibbles. Permission is granted on one condition though: it must be served in a proper flute.

Wellness Water: alcohol free, dairy free, fresh and full of gut-friendly bacteria if you do have Kefir water on hand!

1 Pink Grapefruit 100g Fresh Strawberries 3 tbsp sugar & sparkling water (for Lemonade-style) or ready-made Kefir Water Ice Mint to garnish

Fill a jug with ice. Strain the juice of the grapefruit and strawberries through a sieve into a jug, mix with sugar and a bit of water, until all of the sugar has dissolved. Add a few mint leaves and water to desired consistency as you muddle the ingredients together.

Don't forget to save the pulp from the fruit for your smoothie tomorrow morning.

Drink up, lovelies! AE x
